Akaka Opposes Boehner Default Bill

Statement

U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka issued the following statement tonight:

"I joined a majority of my Senate colleagues this evening in defeating House Speaker Boehner's short-sighted plan. His proposal would only have provided a six-month solution, setting the stage for future rounds of political gridlock while doing little to calm fears of default. It would have hurt Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid, and tied the next necessary increase to an un-passable constitutional amendment, essentially guaranteeing a default.

"Responsible Americans know that raising the debt ceiling is critical to maintaining the nation's creditworthiness and to preventing our sluggish economic recovery from falling back into recession or worse. Rather than Speaker Boehner's plan, we should pursue a longer-term fix such as the one proposed by Majority Leader Reid, which will demonstrate to the world that America is serious about meeting all of its financial obligations."
